Service Sunday

Connection with God and one another

FUMC values our connection in Ann Arbor and our partnerships with local nonprofits, living into our United Methodist commitment to social holiness and personal piety. In the spirit of worship that moved deeper into connection with God and one another, we held our first Service Sunday in July. Instead of a morning hour in the sanctuary, everyone was invited to spend two hours serving in and around Ann Arbor.

Serving around Ann Arbor

Service sites included gardening and landscaping in Buhr Park, working for the Breakfast Program at St. Andrew’s, cleaning and organizing at Alpha House, helping at House by the Side of the Road, and assisting with the caretaking of our own downtown building.

Putting action to spoken commitment

The goal was to put action to spoken commitment to service, taking the time slot people normally would give to church and going to organizations to say “we offer willing hands without any catch.” The day was a huge success with over 80 participants! The organizations were thrilled to have ready volunteers to do the stuff that’s above and beyond what their regular volunteers can do.
