July 30, 2023 – A Holy Land: Tell Me No Lies

Rev. Jenaba Waggy's 3-part summer sermon series “A Holy Land” examines the ways in which we talk about our historical and geographical awareness of God at work in the world, asking how we measure holiness and how we sometimes strive to keep Jesus away from the dust and dirt of our lives.

When Solomon asks for wisdom, God says it is the best choice and then gives all the things Solomon avoided asking for — riches upon riches in unexpected largesse. Yet both Solomon’s request for wisdom and God’s ongoing covenant with Solomon’s family and people are shaded in caveats and politics because that’s where we humans so often live. How do we ask for things in earnest but phrase them less than earnestly? How do we find ourselves giving things with and without strings attached? What does it look like to be truly generous in the different relationships we have?
