July 23, 2023 – A Holy Land: Gatekeepers and Changemakers

Rev. Jenaba Waggy's 3-part summer sermon series “A Holy Land” examines the ways in which we talk about our historical and geographical awareness of God at work in the world, asking how we measure holiness and how we sometimes strive to keep Jesus away from the dust and dirt of our lives.

We often talk about “holy spaces” that are deliberately, noticeably set apart — church sanctuaries, graveyards, particularly beautiful mountain valleys with the sun shining in a certain way. If we aren’t careful, we start thinking that holiness only happens in spaces like that where both we and God feel more comfortable tapping into our spiritual side. What would it be like to treat our offices as holy for a day, or the gym, or the stretch of road where we always get stuck on the commute because of construction and traffic? How do we recognize the thrum of God’s presence in the places that don’t look holy at all?
