July 16, 2023 – A Holy Land: A Scarcity of Blessing

Rev. Jenaba Waggy's 3-part summer sermon series “A Holy Land” examines the ways in which we talk about our historical and geographical awareness of God at work in the world, asking how we measure holiness and how we sometimes strive to keep Jesus away from the dust and dirt of our lives.

So much of Genesis is the theme of struggle, of dual sides, of not enough for everyone. It is the defining of us and them and the separation of destinies, for people and for nations. Thousands of years later, we are still separating us and them and holding tightly to what we have in case there isn't enough--land, faith, water, hope, peace, weapons, love, wealth. Through the lens of Jacob and Esau and the deeply unhealthy lineage of Abraham, we examine this week the idea of scarcity in a faith of abundance. How are we scrabbling to make sure we have--and turning away from when others have not? Where is God at work in the moments where there truly is only one birthright, not enough stew, too much strife?
