During March 29 – April 13 FUMC’s Mind the Gap group is leading our church’s annual Bread for the World Offering of Letters campaign when we send letters and emails asking our elected officials to improve and fund programs that help people out of poverty and become more food secure.

We are suggesting you write or email your Congressional representatives asking them to:

  • Fully fund the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Support the Farm Bill which not only affects agriculture and food sectors but also plays a huge role in ending food insecurity and hunger in the U.S. through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
  • Expand a child tax credit that prioritizes cutting child hunger and poverty in half.
  • Internationally, to restore funding for USAID’s vital humanitarian and development programs immediately, and provide robust funding for global nutrition programs.

How you can help – send letters or emails:
We know that handwritten personalized letters have the most impact, but sending an email or a pre-printed sample letter with a personalized note at the bottom works well too.

  • Letters: Instructions and a sample letter will be available for you to pick up at worship services at Green Wood and downtown, or you can find them online here.
  • Emails: If you choose to send an email, use the QR Code here to be taken to an email set up by Bread for the World that you can personalize and send. Bread for the World will ask if you are a part of an Offering of Letters and to share the organization you are associated with. This will help credit our church with letters; please list the church as “First UMC of Ann Arbor, MI.

You can learn more about the Bread for the World organization here, and about the Offering of Letters here where you can also scroll down and expand the ‘Policy Information” section to find two fact sheets to learn more.

Join us at Sunday Connections after worship on March 29, April 6 and April 13, there will be opportunities to write a letter and learn more. Questions or need help? Contact us at fumcmindthegap@gmail.com.

Please email us at fumcmindthegap@gmail.com to let us know how many letters or emails you’ve sent. Thank you for advocating to see that everyone has access to nutritious food so they can lead healthy lives!
