Piloting a service for families
In June 2024, FUMC piloted a new worship experience for families as part of Rev. Nancy Lynn’s doctoral research project. The service was designed to be a space for children and their grownups to deepen their faith together. The Family Worship team, composed of Kids Ministry staff and a few volunteers, drew components from Sunday School and the normal 10 a.m. Sunday service to create a space that was interactive, fun and, above all, prayerful.
A new worship space
The chapel in the church was re-decorated with alternative seating and props where families could come together. The service included a variety of music, prayer time, engaging activities to learn about the Bible, and a “learning moment” with Rev. Nancy. The theme chosen for the four weeks of service was Covenant, and was spent discussing Noah’s Ark, Sarah and Abraham, Moses, and the Last Supper. Through each week, the concept of God’s promises was tied throughout.
Weaving child-like learning & traditional worship
The pilot was a huge success! Each service averaged 25-30 individuals, ranging from toddlers to grandparents. Families that otherwise may not cross paths got an opportunity to worship together and make new connections. Young children leading prayers and sharing their knowledge on God’s promises is a beautiful way to experience worship. Weaving child-like learning with components of traditional worship led to growth not only for kids and their families, but for the whole congregation as well.
