Family Camp
A beloved FUMC tradition
At the end of May 2024, FUMC families gathered together for a weekend in nature filled with fun, adventure, faith and fellowship. Family Camp is a beloved FUMC tradition where participants grow closer together and with God. For the second year in a row, Family Camp took place at the beautiful YMCA Camp Algonquin in Hastings, Michigan.
Serenity & adventure
Family Camp offers serenity and adventure all at once. Participants made crafts together, including watercolor paintings and friendship bracelets, and played board games. Adventure activities included high ropes, archery, ax throwing, ziplining, a giant swing, rock climbing, pontoon boating, canoeing, island exploring and paddle boarding.
It’s particularly special to see the growth in the kids coming to camp each year. Some who came last year weren’t ready for the adventure activities, like the zipline, but were able to participate this year. Many of the kids at camp came out of their shell, bonded with each other, had fun and made new friendships!
Working together
A unique component to Family Camp is that everyone works together, as one giant family, to make the weekend great. Each participant has an assigned job throughout the weekend to help care for each other and camp. Some of those jobs include serving on the meal teams – preparing, cooking and cleaning up from the meals; making stovetop popcorn for the campfire; reading picture books around the fire or in the cabins before bed; assisting with the various parts of the worship service; providing music for the service or around the campfire; or leading activities like crafts, games, yoga or a guided hike.
