Confirmation

Youth Confirmation addresses key aspects of faith at a critical time in the faith journey of youth. Each journey is different. We do not tell Confirmands what to believe but provide information for them to take their own path.

Confirmation class members are not required to follow through with FUMC A2membership If they are not ready. They are given a choice near the conclusion of classes.

Who… is Youth Confirmation for?

Eighth graders and any high schoolers who missed confirmation for whatever reason (e.g. Covid, attended elsewhere, etc.). In fact, we encourage high schoolers to confirmation. A mix of ages creates a good class dynamic.

What… is Youth Confirmation?

Youth Confirmation is class that leads to full adult membership in our church. The class curriculum begins with discussion of God/Jesus/Holy Spirit (the Trinity), continues to the Bible, basic Christianity, worship and concludes with Methodism and our FUMC A2 congregation.

When… is Youth Confirmation?

Youth Confirmation takes place on eight Sunday afternoons (approximately two each month) starting in January and ending in May. Classes start at 4:30 p.m. and end at 6 p.m. for the start of fellowship time.

Why… eighth graders and older?

On UMC.org, there is discussion about what is the right age for youth confirmation. Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards notes, “When you think about what’s required to live out these vows with integrity, it requires a measure of adult agency.” We’ve found eighth graders have sufficient “adult agency” to do this and participate in a program that leads to full adult membership in FUMC Ann Arbor.
